The Southeast Fire Centre said in a media release Monday that current weather conditions in the region are having an impact on wildfires with wind activity causing the size of several fires to grow on Sunday, July 30, 2017.

The Lower Mainland RCMP is warning the public about a cyber extortion scheme that tricks victims into believing their loved ones have been kidnapped.

While similar schemes are being reported worldwide, the six Lower Mainland incidents appear to be targeted at female Chinese nationals attending schools in the greater Vancouver area.

Residents and visitors within the area between Rusty Creek and Cascade Creek along Highway 31 (see map) 30 kilometers northwest of Lardeau in the north end of Kootenay Lake are being placed on an Evacuation Alert said the Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operation Centre in a media release Sunday evening.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Centre said in a media release Monday the Harrop Creek wildfire continues to burn, but still poses no threat to any communities or infrastructure.

The RDCK said BC Wildfire Service personnel would monitor the fire while attempting to develop control strategies for the now 200-hectare blaze.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Centre reports local departments in the Bonnington area were called Friday morning to deal with a house fire.

The fire was contained to the house at 3763 Thompson Road in Bonnington.

However, the house was lost in the fire.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay says in a media release Friday the wildfire burning south of Harrop does not appear to have grown overnight, remaining at 20 hectares in size.

RDCK said BC Wildfire will be letting the fire burn as the current terrain is dangerous for crews.

Creston RCMP said a body recovered from Crawford Creek Wednesday is believed to be that of missing Crawford Bay teacher Alvin Dunic.

The 57-year-old Nelson resident went missing in May after leaving the Crawford Bay Elementary-Secondary School to look for a spot near Crawford Creek where his students could complete a poetry project.

For a few frightful hours Wednesday afternoon, residents of Taghum and Beasley were on high alert after a wildfire was spotted near the Beasley Bluffs on Highway 3A, 10 kilometers west of Nelson.
