Bev Maloff - School district trustee incumbent

I have been a long time resident of Castlegar since 1958. I have one daughter who graduated from SHSS and UVic and is a registered nurse. I have been a school trustee for 18years.

At the present time I am the Vice Chair of School District No. 20 and have held that position for nine years. Prior to that, I was the Board Chair for three years. Presently I am the Board’s Representative to the BC School Trustees Association at Provincial Council.

Why am I running for School Trustee? I am running as I believe in the public education system. I care and am passionate about education.   I am an involved trustee. Last year I visited all thirteen schools, taking pictures, and most of all listening to staff. I spend time with the principals, teachers, CUPE and students. It is gratifying listening to the students who are so proud to show their work and to the teachers explaining how well their students are doing. As parents and grandparents you know what it is like watching that child’s eyes light up to explain their project to you. When I am in the schools, I realize that is why I love being a trustee.

I believe that parents have an important role in our education system and have always advocated for parental involvement in the schools. This is where I started when I became involved in my daughter’s schools. I was secretary at Castlegar Primary, secretary for Twin Rivers then Chair of Twin Rivers PAC. I wish we could engage more parents attending Parent Advisory Council meetings. I try and attend as many PAC meetings as possible to listen to the parents, to get a feel of what is happening by their perspective and give them information in what is happening at the Board table.

I am accountable, ensuring the dollars received are spent, where they should be in the classroom.
As the government looks into personalized learning, I will work with teachers and parents to ensure students have choice. I am flexible, open to new ideas and energetic enough to make the decisions that are fair and open minded. All my decisions go towards doing what is best for students and putting their educational needs first.

I believe the School Board should be in contact with other local government. I have a good rapport with the City Council and have met with them periodically.

The qualities and strengths I will continue to bring to the table are those of honesty, integrity and fairness. Most important, I am a listener. To have your voice heard at the table in School District No. 20 vote BEV MALOFF Advance poll on November 8 and 9 or on November 19, 2011. STUDENT EDUCATION IS MY PASSION. Thank you.
