Dan Rye - City council

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a 12 year resident of Castlegar having moved here from Vancouver Island in 1999 with my wife Randi. I am the Manager at Kootenay Market. Before moving from the Island I spent eight years on Municipal Council In Gold River. Since moving here I have been involved with the evening Rotary Club (president in 2005-2006) President Chamber of Commerce(2009-2011) past Director of United Way, member of Curling Club and Castlegar Golf Club.

My past experience has taught me to work within a group to get things done, we may not always agree on things but I work with the  team for the betterment of the community. I will bring this experience with me to the Council Table.  I will come to the table with no certain agenda or axes to grind.

I believe making the Regional Airport a more reliable place for landing is a major issue facing Castlegar. Opening up the airport will definitely make Castlegar the Hub of the Kootenays.

The present council worked hard to get a new Official Community Plan in place after many years, now is the time to move this plan forward.

The Millennium Park Master Plan was another major accomplishment, let’s keep the momentum going.

Recreation Facilities will come up again in the next three years and I want to see major consultation take place with the user groups. People need to be consulted and believe they are being listened to.

We need to have a plan in place for Business Retention and Expansion. Empty storefronts throughout the city are a concern to me. Let’s find a way to attract new business to the City while making sure the existing businesses are strong and vibrant.

Events such as Sculpturewalk, Communities in Bloom, Sunfest, and Kootenay Festival are all events that build Community Spirit and pride. Let’s promote these events to attract even more people into the community. When these people come they spend money in the community, this becomes a win/win for business and the community as a whole.

Health Care needs to be constantly in front of the Government. We need to make sure we have the best Health Care available for our citizens. Lets constantly be reminding  the  Government and Interior Health that Castlegar is the best place to build a new Regional Hospital.

The only promise I can make to the citizens of Castlegar is that I will work hard and listen to your concerns after I am elected.
