My name is Jo-Ann Bursey and I am one of the candidates aspiring to be one of your school trustees for school district 20. I believe I am a beneficial candidate with my 16 years of experience with school district 5 & school district 20, not only have I volunteered in the school district, both my children have graduated from Stanley Humphries in 2007 and 2010. For the past eight years that our family has lived in Castlegar I have been influential team member in school district 20 with;
- The District Parent Advisory Council
- PAC secretary SHSS
- PAC President SHSS
- Parent rep for the budget review committee for the school district
- Also a parent rep on the policy review committee.
We are coming upon an exciting change here in SD20 as the ministry of education has released its new education plan. One of its key components is
Personalized education for every student …WOW
When discussing this with my 19-year-old daughter she said “it’s about bloody time” as she is a visual and a tactile learner and sitting in a classroom forced only to listen does not benefit or work for every student. I welcome the long overdue change! Is there going to be challenges! You bet! We all have a role to play students, teachers, parents and the community. The change will be worth it for the success in the future of our kids' education.
In the districts exciting times of moving forward with education we also have tough decisions to be made in the district when it comes to planning for the future; in making those decisions I need to know the what, when, where, why and how the decisions we make as trustees will impact our kids! In order to answer these questions we have to engage our students, teachers, staff and the community in the process.
I have asked myself, why am I running for school trustee?
I am going to be the voice for the kids, the parents and the community. It is time for a change! A fresh Face…a positive voice in making the decisions that will impact the future of our kid’s education for the better. It takes a community to raise a child and our kid’s education depends on it.
On November 19th I encourage you to vote Jo-Ann Bursey, the voice for the kids, the voice for the parents and the voice for our community.
