An issue that came before council last night could prove contentious enough to end up a platform issue in the upcoming provincial election, according to councillor Deb McIntosh.

This after a presentation, at council's regular meeting, by Dana Schmidt, of the Donna Schmidt Memorial Lung Cancer Prevention Society.

Most people got out to bed this morning to a few April Fools jokes . . . a la, sugar in the salt shaker, clock set ahead, etc.

However, most everyone would never had thought the B.C. Government would ever get rid of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) on April Fools Day.

But that’s just what happened as Provincial Sales Tax (PST) returned to B.C. Monday.

The brought back from the dead, PST replaced the HST, which was introduced on July 1, 2010 and rejected less than two years later by voters in a referendum.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay is keeping a lid on a major increases in 2013, announcing the budget for the upcoming year will be just over one percent.

The projected budget, increasing to $58,686,050 from $58,022,994 — 1.14% increase, will adopt its 2013—2017 Financial Plan on March 28.

“This plan is the result of the Board’s ongoing commitment to serve residents in the most cost-effective means possible while delivering a multitude of services throughout a large and diverse region,” said Chair Kettle in a written release.

Castlegar United Way to close its doors

The region is slated to bid adieu to yet another non-profit organization – the Castlegar United Way – due to lack of volunteers and donours.

United Way president Nicole Beetstra said the almost-half-century-old charity will be closing its doors on May 31, with the official announcement coming at a general meeting on April 2.

On Friday, Manulife Bank posted its lowest rate ever on a 5-year fixed mortgage, 2.89%. It lasted for four days.

When our big brothers at the Department of Finance (DoF) caught wind of it, they dialed up Manulife and swayed the bank into raising its rate back to 3.09%.

The City of Trail may become a technological leader as early as this summer, according to city councillor Sean Mackinlay.

Reporting to council from the Governance and Operations Committee (GOC), Mackinlay said the Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation (CBBC) has now posted a Request for Proposal on BC Bid for the installation of the fibre optics through the downtown core.

“This will give the City of Trail a very competitive edge, especially for downtown businesses,” he said. “It will create a connectivity on par with New York, London, Hong Kong – any major city in the world.”
