Castlegar RCMP have apologized for startling downtown residents Saturday evening by discharging a gun to dispatch a bear that was dangerously close to pedestrians and homes.

Police Cpl. Debbie Postnikoff said police received several bear complaints throughout the evening, but every time they attended, the bear in question was “GOA” (gone on arrival).

That is, until they got a call at 10:52, indicating there was a massive bear at Kootenay Market that was not at all frightened of the caller, who was only about 5 feet away.

Pension continued to be the major stumbling block in getting a deal at Heritage Credit Union and HG Insurance.

The union representing workers at Heritage Credit Union and HG Insurance in Castlegar and Slocan Park issued a deadline to the employer Thursday.

USW Local 1-405 Financial Secretary Jeff Bromley said in a written press release issued a deadline of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 5 to get a deal in place, or else.

“We seemed to have reached the end of the line,” Bromley said.

“The pension issue has been the biggest stumbling block since we began this process in May and we’re still not there yet.”

Another Fortis construction project - the Okanagan Transmission Reinforcement project from the Southern Okanagan.

Between 60 and 70 people attended a public open house last night (Wednesday) in Ootischenia last night, as Fortis BC unveiled its plans for a proposed $16-million operations centre at 120 Ootischenia Road, according to Fortis spokesman Blair Weston.

“Largely, people support the project,” he said. “There are concerns about traffic flow in the area – that seemed to be the predominant negative concern. We do have a traffic plan that we were able to present.”

The council of the City of Castlegar wishes to establish a revitalization tax exemption program in order to create an economic stimulus that will encourage capital investment, expand the commercial property tax base, enhance the visual appeal of commercial properties within the city and create economic growth opportunities throughout the city.

Workers voted 76 percent not to accept the final offer proposed by Heritage Credit Union and HG Insurance.

Bar a blaze that destroyed a Genelle home and injured a firefighter (see: http://castlegarsource.com/news/fire-destroys-home-genelle-injures-firefighter-20525#.UDaiV8GPWSo), the tri-city area remains relatively unscathed during a hot, dry fire season this year, even though several smaller fires have started this past week - including one at the Zellstoff Celgar pulp mill.

Airport celebrates transportation

The Grand Forks airport is rated as one of the best in the Southern Interior of B.C. so volunteers are inviting the community to celebrate with them at the airport appreciation day next Saturday.

The Grand Forks Flying Association is hosting this celebration of transportation. The day’s events including: fly-in, car and bike show, pancake breakfast, flying demonstrations and a skydiving company will be attending.
