Environmental projects receive support from CBT

he Kootenay Community Bat Project is one of 36 projects receiving support through Columbia Basin Trust's Environmental Initiativ

Thirty-six projects striving to help maintain or enhance environmental conditions and environmental education in and around their communities will be receiving over $1 million in support from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) through its Environmental Initiatives Program (EIP).

"These projects will have positive effects on the Basin environment through both direct action and education," said Sabrina Curtis, CBT Director, Sector Initiatives, "helping reduce the impacts people have on our region's aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems."

Selkirk teams with local business to compost for Earth Day

For two weeks this year, in celebration of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, the downtown Castlegar office of RHC Insurance, with the help of Gaia Janitorial Services, is sending their compostables like lunch scraps, coffee grounds and used paper towels over to Selkirk College.

In 2011, Selkirk College began operating a large composting vessel as part of a pilot composting program on their Castlegar campus.

Gardeners will not want to miss the fourth annual Nature Fest.

Gardeners and nature lovers from around the region will want to mark May 18 on their calendars for Castlegar’s Fourth Annual Garden and Nature Fest.

The Castlegar Garden Club and Castlegar Communities in Bloom are partnering to sponsor this open-air festival at the Castlegar Community Complex (2101 6th Ave) from 10 a.m. To 3 p.m.

This is a new venue for the festival, due to ongoing improvements at Millennium Park, but it promises to be every bit as special as the previous three festivals.

Foodtree Permaculture Education and the Castlegar Public Library are teaming up to help you get the garden of your dreams this season with Castlegar Seed Swap this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“Find new plant varieties you can grow for the first time! Maybe you’ve been seeking perfect plants to fill those empty spots in your rich garden canvas?,” said a press release issued for the event. “Come swap seeds and shop with some of our region’s most passionate gardeners! Enjoy trading your abundance of seed packets and home grown seeds. Trade and buy seeds with local gardeners or even seek a little garden advice and companionship!”

Foodtree collaborator Kate Wedemire, in an interview Wednesday, said Foodtree exists to help people learn about their own food sovereignty, and they even boast a four-acre demonstration farm in Crescent Valley (one could hear roosters crowing in the background during the telephone interview) where they focus on food Kootenay residents can grow in their own backyards .

Official word on the death of a Castlegar teacher yesterday

Superintendent of School Division 20 (SD 20) Greg Luterbach, has released a statement regarding the untimely death of a teacher yesterday morning at Twin Rivers Elementary.

"We suffered a tragedy at Twin Rivers Elementary School Tuesday.  Brian Rigby, a teacher in our district since the mid-'90s, died suddenly and unexpectedly.

"In addition to our grief over the loss of this member of our community, we are sensitive to the fact that such an event has an impact on our staff and students," he added.
