Windstorm leaves downtown powerless

 A storm Monday afternoon closed many local businesses and left City Hall in the dark when winds gusting up to 65 km/h knocked trees onto power lines along Arrow Lakes Drive.

Fortis BC spokesperson Nancy MacLeod said more than 2,300 Castlegar customers were 'power-less' from about 1:45 to 4:50 p.m., while homes and businesses in Genelle and Blueberry had power restored slightly sooner.

Osprey cam offers fascinating glimpse into raptor life

 The osprey chicks have left the nest and the live-streaming osprey cam, jointly operated by the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) and the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, has been switched off. Two of the three chicks fledged successfully and this particular osprey family will be soon head south for winter.

Obama announces plan to build roads, railroads and runways

In a speech in Wisconsin, US President Barack Obama announced a USD50 billion plan to restore 150,000 miles of roads, lay 4,000 miles of railroad tracks and rebuild 150 miles of airport runways within six years. The speech was given at an annual Labor Day festival in Milwaukee to union workers on Monday afternoon.
