Elections 2011 Candidates

Kevin Chernoff - City council incumbent

 Ed Note: Councillor Kevin Chernoff is two-term incumbent who was born and raised in Castlegar. He is 51-years-old and manages the family-owned and -operated Trowelex Rentals and Sales, here in town.

Deb McIntosh - City council incumbent

  Ed Note: Councillor Deb McIntosh is a three-term incumbent who was born in Trail and moved to Castlegar 25 years ago. She's 48 years old and manages the Station Museum and Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park. McIntosh became a grandma for the first time just last month.

Russ Hearne - City council incumbent

Ed Note: Russ Hearne is a 41-year-old, two-term incumbent who was born and raised in Salmo and moved to Castlegar 17 years ago. He manages Andrew Sheret and is the proud father of two teenaged children.

It has been a pleasure and an honour to be a Castlegar City Councillor for the past two terms.  I am asking for your support for another term.

Kirk Duff - City council incumbent

My wife Myra and I have lived in Castlegar since 1988. We have three grown children, three granddaughters and a dog named Molly. I am an active 30-year+  Lions Club member. I am in my 33rd year with Teck Metals with my current position being Quality Assurance Specialist. I was first elected to the Kimberley City Council in 1984 and to the Castlegar City Council in 1990.

Gord Turner - City council incumbent

Ed Note: Gord Turner is a three-term incumbent and instructor of English at Selkirk College. Born and raised in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, Turner moved to Castlegar 31 years ago, and now has three grandchildren with two more on the way. 

Those who know Gord Turner speak of his excellence as a professor at Selkirk College, his capable handling of Rotary activities, particularly scholarships, and his sensitive writing of informative columns for various local news outlets.

Dan Rye - City council

 

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a 12 year resident of Castlegar having moved here from Vancouver Island in 1999 with my wife Randi. I am the Manager at Kootenay Market. Before moving from the Island I spent eight years on Municipal Council In Gold River.

Tyler Maddocks - City council

 Born and raised in Castlegar,  I’ve attended local public schools and graduated from Selkirk College. After successfully completing my Business Administration Diploma at Selkirk College in Castlegar, I relocated to Vancouver, where I was employed as a Sales Account Executive for a marketing firm.

Cord LaFond - City council

 I moved my family to Castlegar in 1997 to go to Selkirk College. The climate agreed with my health  so I dug in my heals and Castlegar is my home. In a nutshell, this city has been good to me and I accept this opportunity to give something back.

Peter Wulowka - City council

   I was born in Victoria in 1970, and moved to Castlegar in the summer of 1980. I attended Stanley Humphries Secondary school "class of 1988" then went to Okanagan college in 1989 for a four- year apprenticeship in carpentry.

Sue Heaton-Sherstobitoff - City council

 Finding the best solutions to difficult issues requires respect, open dialogue and debate. It also needs participation of residents to ensure input and feedback occurs before implementing policy. As a result, I believe I have the experience, determination and commitment to work in the best interests of all residents.

 My name is Lawrence Chernoff, and I’ve been Castlegar’s Mayor for two terms now, and a city councillor for 16 years before that.

Bev Maloff - School district trustee incumbent

 I have been a long time resident of Castlegar since 1958. I have one daughter who graduated from SHSS and UVic and is a registered nurse. I have been a school trustee for 18years.

At the present time I am the Vice Chair of School District No. 20 and have held that position for nine years. Prior to that, I was the Board Chair for three years. Presently I am the Board’s Representative to the BC School Trustees Association at Provincial Council.

Jo-Ann Bursey - School district trustee

 My name is Jo-Ann Bursey and I am one of the candidates aspiring to be one of your school trustees for school district 20. I believe I am a beneficial candidate with my 16 years of experience with school district 5 & school district 20, not only have I volunteered in the school district, both my children have graduated from Stanley Humphries in 2007 and 2010. For the past eight years that our family has lived in Castlegar I have been influential team member in school district 20 with;

  • The District Parent Advisory Council
  • PAC secretary SHSS
  • PAC President SHSS
  • Parent rep for the budget review committee for the school district
  • Also a parent rep on the policy review committee.

Jen Carter - School district trustee

 

My name is Jen Carter. I am a recently retired teacher. I have lived and worked in Castlegar for my entire career.

 
I see the role of school trustee as that of a representative and facilitator for the people of our community. I am willing and able to fulfill both of these roles. Good leadership skills are critical when assuming the role of a school trustee.
