A 68-year-old Castlegar man has been charged with possession of child pornography and making available child pornography, according to RCMP Cpl Debbie Postnikoff, who added the Castlegar Crime Reduction Unit and Castlegar RCMP Detachment executed a search warrant at the man’s home on April 16.

“The man was arrested and later released on several conditions which include not being allowed to possess any electronics that have the capability of accessing the internet, not to have communication with anyone under the age of 16 years old, not to possess any pornographic material by electronic means, and not to have a functioning internet connection inside his home or access the internet anywhere,” Postnikoff said.

She said this should serve as a cautionary tale to remind parents to be vigilant in monitoring their children’s Internet activity and contacts.

“These kind of crimes are happening in small communities – we’re not exempt,” she said. “Internet predators are everywhere.”

She also said it’s warning to potential predators.

“This file serves as a reminder that your activities on the Internet are monitored and that you cannot erase your mark.”

The BC-Integrated Child Exploitation Unit (BC-ICE) is responsible for identifying and assisting child victims of sexual abuse, monitoring and prosecuting child pornography distributors and viewers. The BC-ICE unit uses online undercover officers to identify and apprehend those who target children on the internet for a sexual purpose. Local police became aware of the illegal activity of this Castlegar man from information provided from the BC-ICE unit.

The man’s first appearance is scheduled for May 23 in Castlegar.
