A 16-year-old arrested and charged with sexual assault has been released on conditions.

The charges stem from an incident Feb. 7,  in which a 28-year-old woman was accosted in the changeroom at the Castlegar Complex, but successfully fought off her assailant, who then fled.  Castlegar RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Laurel Mathew said the young man was arrested and sent for a psychological evaluation, but appeared again in court March 8, and has now been released pending his next court date April 20. She said this doesn’t need to frighten Castlegar women.  “Vigilance is always a good idea, and so is taking basic safety precautions, but we’ll be watching him very, very closely,” she said, adding the release conditions are quite rigorous.  The conditions include:  1.      Keeping the peace and good behavior;  2.      Remaining at residential address with parents 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except when in the company of one or both parents, or another court-approved adult;  3.      No contact or communication with the victim;         Must respond to the phone or attend the door of his residence 24 hours a day, seven days a week, upon the demand of a peace officer that calls or attends to ensure compliance with this curfew;  5.      Not to attend the Castlegar Complex;  6.      Not to consume alcohol or drugs.
