The Trail RCMP detachment has confirmed that the body of an Alberta man killed in Monday’s avalanche has been recovered from the Mnt. Mackie area in the West Kootenay region near Rossland.

“The recovery was first hampered by poor weather, preventing a proper risk assessment of the surrounding area,” said RCMP Cpl. Dave Johnson. “Once the weather cleared, the Rossland Search and Rescue team, along with the RCMP and other local partners, were able to utilize a helicopter with long line recovery team to aid in the recovery in  steep and secluded terrain.

“The recovery was completed without any further incident and the body has now been turned over to the BC Coroners office,” he said.

“The RCMP and other emergency services would like to remind all back country enthusiasts of the inherent dangers of these activities and that tragedy can occur at any time no matter what level of preparedness or experience you possess.”

The name of the avalanche victim will not be releasedto the public, as per his family’s request.
