Castlegar Citizens on Patrol (COP) are actively recruiting for volunteers, according to chairman Paul Thederahn.

“Currently, we are operating with seven volunteers but the ideal number of volunteers is 15,” he said. ”We are trained in using safe practices at all times and have fun while patrolling. We have taken over speed watch and can be set up at any time monitoring vehicle speeds.”

This portable speed radar equipment and big flashing reader board give you instant feedback on how fast you are driving. However, you do not get a ticket unless the police are around the next corner.

When asked what the most unexpected incident the patrol was involved with, Thederahn said, “We were able to locate a sexual perpetrator. The victim provided a detailed description of his vehicle and we were able to locate the vehicle and suspect shortly after.”

To be clear, COP doesn’t capture suspects or affect arrests – but they were able to alert police as to the locale of the suspect in questions.

Thederahn said the most interesting incidents in his experience included catching a duo allegedly committing a break-and-enter, as well as a hit-and-run that also resulted in an impaired charge.

RCMP Const. Kyle Plotnikoff said, “Citizens on Patrol are an extra set of eyes and ears for the Castlegar Detachment. They provide assistance on numerous files.

“COPs are a great benefit to the entire community.”

People volunteer for a wide variety of reasons. With COP, you will become familiar with the community and be part of an important team.

Should anyone be interested in joining the Castlegar Citizens on Patrol, they can contact the Castlegar RCMP Detachment at 250-365-7721.
