A suspected methamphetamine lab operating near Rock Creek (34 kilometres east of Osoyoos) has been shut down and dismantled following a RCMP investigation.

On (Wednesday) March 1, members of the RCMP Federal Clandestine Laboratory Enforcement and Response Team (CLEAR) with the support of other RCMP Federal and Serious Organized Crime teams and regional detachments executed a search warrant on the rural property, seizing a significant quantity of illicit drugs, numerous weapons and arresting two men.

“We believe the sophisticated lab had the potential to produce significant amount of methamphetamine. In shutting it down we have prevented dangerous illicit drugs from reaching our communities,” said Sgt. Annie Linteau spokesperson for the BC RCMP.

“As disturbing though, was the dumping of hazardous chemicals on the property, which potentially could have harmed innocent people living in the area.”

While at the scene investigators saw signs of the dumping of hazardous waste created during the production of illegal drugs and contacted the Emergency Management BC to advise them of the potential health impacts and environmental damage.

As a precautionary measure a three kilometre do not use radius has been established around the site by Interior Health.

The RCMP continues to work with the Ministry of Environment and other parties to expedite water sampling and share information about this incident with the public.

For more information go to the Ministry of Environment’s website at http://ow.ly/DQlb309zg1M or Twitter at https://twitter.com/SpillsInfoBC .

RCMP officers and hazardous material contractors are expected to remain on the site for several days as the investigation continues.  Charges are pending.

Members of the Federal RCMP CLEAR team undergo specialized training and have access to special equipment that allows them to process material that is too dangerous for other police officers to touch.

Anyone suspecting that a clandestine illicit drug laboratory could be operating, is asked to contact local police.
