Hundreds of logs break free of booms near Hugh Keenleyside

The Hugh Keenleyside Dam had to reduce flows over the weekend, after wind broke log booms upstream of the dam, leaving hundreds of logs free-floating down the river toward the dam.
Over 100 bundles (each bundle is a semi-truckload of logs) came loose on the Arrow Lake and broke through the log booms at the dam and generation station.
Mary Anne Coules, with BC Hydro Public Relations, said action taken at the dam meant significantly decreased flow levels downstream on the Columbia River.
“Urgent action was required for dam and powerhouse safety reasons,” Coules said. “The flow reductions occurred in a timely manner and dam safety was not compromised at any time.”
Flow levels were returned to normal on Sunday.
