Quantum Leaps: Girls Talk Tech

The Quantum Leaps conference focuses on career development and highlights the importance of continuing science and technology courses in secondary and post secondary schools to ensure a wide range of career opportunities for female students in Grades 9-12.

Hosted at Selkirk College in Castlegar, this free conference is open to female high school students, high school counselors and interested parents from the West Kootenay Boundary regions.

Despite the fact that girls are on par with boys in math and science proficiency scores (Girls Inc, 2006) females continue to be under-represented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers (Statistics Canada, 2006).

This conference is not only for female students who excel in math and science studies and may be already committed to a scientific career but it is also geared towards students that may be considering dropping science and math as they do not see its importance and practical application in their future.

The group sessions will feature panel discussions as well as local, successful, women who work in the STEM workforce and will be designed to stimulate interest and to emphasize the importance of keeping one’s options open by continuing in math and science studies throughout high school.

KAST presents “Building Knowledge”, a Mentorship Conference on  Sept.25. Come away with valuable tools on how to start a mentorship program within your organization or expand an existing program.

Did you know there is a free way for individuals in your community to find answers to business problems, train new employees, provide confidence to youth and encourage individuals in seemingly difficult situations to find solutions? Such a thing exists in mentorship. Mentorship is the process of matching people with expertise with those looking for guidance.

This one-day conference will provide you with the necessary tools to start a local mentorship program, and will include panels, workshops and speakers from successful mentorship organizations throughout B.C.. If you’re already running a mentorship program you will get up-to-date on new funding sources, evaluation tools and have an opportunity to network with your peers.

The conference will be held at the Prestige Mountain Resort in Rossland but will also be available online for those not able to travel. Registration is open to anyone who is interested in mentorship and mentorship programs.
