Nelson Fire Rescue Services report there were no injuries at a house fire Tuesday night on Perrier Road south of Nelson.

Assistant Fire Chief Michael Daloise said in a media release fortunately all occupants of the house were able to escape without injury, primarily due to the working smoke alarm.

“The fire appears to have originated in the kitchen with smoke damage throughout the main floor area,” Daloise explained.

Daloise said the call came in at approximately 8:38 p.m. to Nelson Fire Rescue Services requiring both on duty members as well as  21 additional off-duty career and auxiliary members responding from home.

“When the first crew arrived there was a large amount of flame showing from the window at the rear of the house,” Daloise said.

“The house was completely full of smoke including coming from the eaves.  The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to control the spread of the fire.

“Crews encountered a large amount of fire in the kitchen area and were able to slow the spread of the fire until additional crews arrived to assist with extinguishment.’

Daloise said the next challenge was to ensure that there was no fire extension into the walls and attic.

“Due to the type of building materials and insulation that was used this required the removal of the ceiling and some of the wall coverings in the kitchen,” he said.

Two fire engines, one ladder truck, and two utility vehicles were used to fight the blaze.

No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.  Damage is estimated in excess of $75,000.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Daloise said Nelson Fire Rescue Services would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to test their smoke alarms on a regular basis and to make sure that they keep their Christmas tree watered during the upcoming season.
