On Wednesday, April 14, the Ootischenia Community Society (OCS) organized a Community Street Clean-Up.

The call to clean up the local streets was heeded by several residents, meeting at the firehall where trash pickers, bags, and high visibility vests were provided. The volunteers then dispersed in small groups, each taking on a section of the community, managing to clean up most of the streets. It was a great effort by those who joined in—approximately 10-15 garbage bags were filled!

The OCS appreciates all of the volunteers for their help in cleaning up our beautiful community. The society is planning to make the clean-up an annual event and loves to see residents getting involved in such a positive way.

Even the Fortis team joined in the effort, cleaning up the streets around their facility earlier in the day. The OCS was pleased that Fortis accepted the invitation to join in the event, showing their support for the community. They also indicated their intent to continue to be a part of the community clean-up initiative in the coming years.

The event was also supported by Dennis and his team at Green for Life Environmental (GFL) who donated their trucks and personal time to pick up the waste bags and bring them to the landfill. The generosity and enthusiasm they showed in supporting the event was fantastic! OCS extends a huge thank you to GFL!

OCS was created in 2019 by local residents in order to increase community involvement and keep residents informed on important matters. The Society’s ultimate goal is to acquire land for a park to be enjoyed by families from Ootischenia and beyond. Since its inception, OCS has held several successful fundraisers and had planned to do more but, unfortunately, the fundraising activities were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Undeterred, OCS is in the process of designing new COVID-safe fundraisers to help them reach their goals.
