LETTER: Cuts at Castlegar Primary don't just hurt programs - they hurt kids

LETTER: Cuts at Castlegar Primary don't just hurt programs - they hurt kids

What has 34 legs, speaks Russian but has no teacher?

The soon-to-be Grade 3 Russian Bilingual (RB) class.

Unfortunately, it is the intention of school administration to split this class between two schools: 13 children will remain at Castlegar Primary in a split Grade 2-3 RB class, while four children will be sent to a split Grade3/4 class at Twin Rivers Elementary School.

LETTER: Quebec protests about much more than tuition

LETTER: Quebec protests about much more than tuition
Greetings to you, my friends in the Rest of Canada (ROC)

I am writing you because i am really concerned that English Canada is not getting good information on what is happening right now in Québec.  Particularly lamentable is the CBC and the Globe and Mail.  And, apparently, Maclean’s.

You are being presented with a lot of information about a few demonstrators who have a political agenda and use aggressive tactics to get across their message.

LETTER: Oberfeld way out of line, says local MP

LETTER: Oberfeld way out of line, says local MP

Dear Editor,

In reading the May 23 OPED “Pushing the West OUT of Canada” I was shocked at the hateful level of vitriol and misrepresentation being expressed by the author.  To suggest that NDP leader Tom Mulcair, or any other New Democrat MP would consider “screwing the West” to win seats in Eastern Canada is a slanderous attack based purely on fiction.

It would appear that the author prefers to rely on simplistic Conservative Party talking points to form his politic opinions rather than take the time to delve into the issues.

Do you have an idea or program that addresses the health, social or environmental challenges facing BC communities? Do you know someone who does?

Llama letter: animal owner offers thanks and clarification

Llama letter: animal owner offers thanks and clarification

Well, quite the day was Tuesday. While my wife Carolyn was in Kentucky for the famous Derby, my daughter Casey and I were in a bit of a track meet ourselves.

As everyone knows by now, one of our llamas got out of her enclosure and went for a sight seeing tour of Ootischenia and Castlegar. While it has been written that Cocoa has been on the “lam” three times, the truth is this is her first escape. At her previous home in Fruitvale, they were kept in a pasture with no complete fence system and as such just walked out and into the neighbourhood. We don't know what caused her to take up high jumping and leap the fence, but I'm pretty sure she was spooked by something. Possibly a bear or even strong wind.

Nelson-Creston Greens join mayors in effort to halt meaningless war

The Editor, The Nelson Daily:

Calls to end the infamous 'War on Drugs' don't just come from the funny dressed hairy crowd anymore.

Over the decades a number of Canadian senate committees have called for an end to it and the conservative Fraser Institute has condemned it since 2001.

Last June the United Nations Global Commission on Drugs Policy put it this way: “the criminalization, marginalization and stigmatization of people who use drugs but do no harm to others should be ended”.

LETTER: Not everyone impressed with city delegation to Embetsu

To the Editor:

Once again it is spring in the land of Happily Ever After and the mayor's thoughts have turned to travel.

Some time ago in his not so peaceful court he was rebuked for his travel plans to a far and distant kingdom. However, being the King of the land, he said to his court, nay I shall bring this back to court and I shall take even more of you on our journey. Now with the prospect of travel on their minds, who shall be the lucky ones to go on this great adventure?

LETTER: Not everyone thrilled about Rick Hansen's visit

LETTER: Not everyone thrilled about Rick Hansen's visit

Dear Rick Hansen:

I hope that during your next 25 years of raising money for spinal cord research (SCR) we will see the end of inhumane, scientifically fallacious spinal cord experiments on animals. It was 25 years ago when Lifeforce, a Vancouver based ecology and animal rights organization, gave you extensive data about the failure of “animal models” but you went on to fund animal experiments. Your Boards have had many vivisectors directing your funding priorities. You raised $20 million for SCR as the “Man in Motion”. Your “dream” for a cure is a nightmare for animals.

Pacific Coast Airlines VP attempts to clear up media reports

Pacific Coast Airlines VP attempts to clear up media reports

Editor, The Nelson Daily

Below is our response to recent media stories speaking to the safety and reliability of services to Trail versus Castlegar airports.

The primary focus of the stories was on recently released data showing the Trail service being more reliable than the service in Castlegar.

The higher reliability of the Trail service is due to two factors:

Operations
• The flexibility of our operation allows us to delay/hold flight departures for improving weather conditions.
