POLICE BEAT: Woman found with gunshot wound on Canning Road
A 17 year-old woman was found suffering from a gunshot wound on Canning Road in Grand Forks, Saturday, Sept. 22.
The teen, who is not from Grand Forks, called 911 from her cell phone requesting an ambulance at 12:10 a.m. When the ambulance and Grand Forks RCMP arrived on scene, they found the woman lying on the road with a gunshot wound to an undisclosed part of her body.
Grand Forks RCMP staff sergeant Jim Harrison said that this was not a random shooting, but was specifically directed at the victim.
"Police are confident that this will not result in harm to anyone in the community," said Harrison.
The victim was conscious when the ambulance took her to the Boundary Regional Hospital where it was determined her wounds were severe enough to need surgery. She was stabilized and transported to Kelowna General Hospital for that surgery. Police are not disclosing her present location for her own safety. She has been reported to be in a stable condition following the surgery.
Police have determined that the shooting did not take place on the sparsely populated rural road where she was found.
Anyone with information about the incident can call the Boundary Regional RCMP at 250-442-8288 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

I'm concerned enough to need to hear more...
With a teen in our house this story really concerned me. It doesn't make me feel a whole lot better that that this young woman was targetted. Was the shooter another teen or an adult? If the shooting didn't happen on a rural road then did anyone report that they heard a gun shot? Does the victim know the perpetrator? Is he/she apprehended? Seems to me if the gunner is distressed enough to shoot a 17 year old woman then they are unstable enough to be a threat to the rest of the community. Does the gunner have a history of violence and problems?
With a big, outdoor, teen party planned this weekend where drugs and alcohol most likely will be a factor it would be good to inform any parent who may have a teen out and about that there is a gunmen loose who may be looking for a new partner! When police release information and news reports it ...better to inform the public properly so appropriate percautions can be taken. This story needs more information!
I'm very glad to hear the women managed to get help and is recovering.
Police withhold information so they may investigate
Thank you Hockley for your comment and concern. As a parent, I too understand how you feel and those questions were also mine.
However, for the police, it is sometimes important for them to withhold information in order to get more information. If by reporting responsibly on the subject and not pushing for every detail that they can not give at this moment, I feel I am helping them to possibly solve the case. Which makes everyone safer and helps the victim find closure. I have every faith in our local detachment and I wish them the best of luck in finding the person or people responsible.
Thanks again for your thoughtful comments -- keep them coming!
Tricky one
I can't believe this happened in town. Certainly gives me mixed feelings though. I for one am somewhat comforted when hits are targeted as they're likely aimed at someone within the criminal world. Neither is obviously good but if its between a random gunman and one with a specific motive I take the second one.
As for faith in the local detachment, I think they need an image boost. Out of the last handful of high profile cases I don't think any were seen as handled particularly well and it has created a streak unsavoury stories on a national level.
Owen Rooney remains missing, a failure to search the immediate vicinity prolonged the Fulton murder case. They then proceeded to allow 24 bears to be shot to death without even tagging them to link them to the Piche case. Anytime we make national news they appear to have dropped the ball in some manner which is unfortunate because the detachment consist of some truly great members of the community.
Heres hoping they nail this villain and get the credit they deserve for it.
