Police are reporting a quiet holiday season, bar an event in which two Castlegar men appeared to have taken the euphemism “peeing contest” just a tad too literally.

Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew said 11:26 p.m. on Boxing Day saw two men urinating on a Columbia Avenue building downtown while being cheered on by their girlfriends, resulting in both men being fined for public intoxication.

She said police aren’t searching dark alleys to apprehend folks with the need to pee and no washroom handy …but those who choose to urinate all over buildings right in front of the police detachment will likely not go unnoticed.

According to RCMP Cpl. Dan Pollock, there were several more alcohol-related calls on the night of Dec. 26 (and the early morning hours of Dec. 27), including a second public urination incident, but none of the calls resulted in serious charges.

“New Year’s Eve was a quiet one for the Castlegar RCMP,” Pollock added. “ The Castlegar RCMP received only six calls for service on New Year’s Eve between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m., New Year’s Day. Although there were few problems reported, officers were out actively patrolling and conducting road blocks to ensure a safe night of celebrations.

“On Jan.1 at 1:10 a.m., a male attempted to go through a police road block after he had been drinking,” Pollock said. “The male was given a road-side test and subsequently failed. He was issued an immediate 90-day driving prohibition and 30-day vehicle impoundment along with over $500 in fines. He was also found to be a suspended driver and was charged with driving while suspended.

“During the week three additional drivers were given 3-day license suspensions for drinking and driving.”
