Castlegar RCMP issued a strongly-worded press release June 29 regarding vandalism perpetrated against Communities in Bloom floral features around the city.

“Culprits should be ashamed that they pulled flowers from the Communities in Bloom planters at various locations around (the city), including at 850 Columbia Avenue, Ministry of Forests, Pioneer Arena, Benjamin Moore, Millennium Walkway and Arrow Lakes Glass,” said RCMP Const. Sherri Karn. “The damage is estimated at $200 (but  that doesn’t factor in) the additonal volunteer hours required to clean up the mess.”

In an unprecedented show of frustration in the context of an RCMP press release, Karn added, “Volunteers make a community as strong and successful as they are,” she said. “This was completely disrespectful to those who donate their time to make a community better. Our volunteers take time away from their jobs, families and personal lives to help the community as a whole and behaviour such as this is very disheartening.”

With that in mind, RCMP are asking residents to keep a sharp eye out for this sort of activity, and to report both the behaviour itself as well as any related information you might have regarding the incidents. Calls would be welcomed at the detachment  at 250-365-7721 or with CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800-222 8477)
