A 30-year-old Castlegar man may be facing charges ranging from impaired driving to assaulting a police officer and escaping lawful custody after an incident yesterday.

Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew said a passerby called the RCMP to report that he believed there was an impaired driver in the ditch in the 2000 block of Pass Creek Road.  “An officer attended, and located the driver of the vehicle, who appeared to be intoxicated,” Mathew said. “The officer placed the male under arrest for impaired driving, and attempted to secure the male in handcuffs.    “According to the officer, the male turned and resisted arrest, which led to both of them going to the ground.   After a brief struggle, the officer was able to regain control and get the male into handcuffs and secured in the rear seat of the police vehicle. “  But the altercation didn’t end there, according to Mathew.  “While in the rear seat of the police car, the male began to kick the windows of the car. The bars inside the windows were damaged, and the entire door frame was bent out,” she said. “At the detachment, the male refused to provide a breath sample to the breathalyzer technician. As he was being booked into a cell, the male bolted towards the exit door, and when he ran into it, he caused injury to himself. The officer suffered a sore wrist from the encounter but did not require medical treatment.  “(The suspect) was treated for his injuries, and remains in police custody awaiting transport to court.  “It was later alleged by the vehicle’s owner that this male had taken the truck without (the owner’s) permission.”   Mathew said charges being recommended are:   impaired driving, refusal to provide a breath sample, assaulting a police officer, mischief, escaping lawful custody, and taking an auto without consent.  “The RCMP would also like to thank all of the witnesses who either called police, or remained/returned to the scene of the accident to provide the police with pertinent information and to offer assistance,” Mathew concluded.
