Youth pulling...weeds...together

Youth pulling...weeds...together

 What is Youth Pulling Together?

Based on the “Nab the Bully” program of the Fraser Basin Council, Youth Pulling Together (YPT) encourages youth to become local stewards by giving them the knowledge and hands-on experience necessary to identify and control invasive plants on the school ground or a nearby invasive plant site.

Why is it important?

Invasive plants (also called noxious weeds) are introduced, non-native plant species that take over our local landscapes. Because they arrive in Canada without natural predators to keep them under control, they choke out native plants, reduce biodiversity, affect agriculture, and impact wildlife habitat. Some of these species include Policeman’s helmet, Hoary alyssum and Yellow flag iris. By identifying and pulling these plants, we can reduce the impacts they have on our environment

Who can be involved?

The Nab the Bully program was designed for youth aged 9 to 11. In addition to meeting Prescribed Learning Outcomes of the BC School Curriculum for Grades 3 to 6, this program also meets the needs of a variety of youth organizations, including Scouts Canada, Girl Guides of Canada and 4H Clubs. It’s an excellent opportunity to educate youth about the impacts of invasive plants on wildlife and their habitats, and encourage youth to become responsible stewards

How does it work?

The Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee (CKIPC) will provide kits (including background information, pre-event materials and group activities) to interested teachers or youth organization leaders.  In addition to utilizing the kits within the classroom, we welcome teachers or group leaders  to schedule a two-hour pulling event for Spring 2010 between May and July. The event may include a ½ hour to 1-hour pull at a high priority site near the school, along with educational activities, all facilitated by the CKIPC.

Afterward, teachers will receive leave-in class materials and evaluation forms.  For more information on the program, to borrow a YPT kit or to schedule a delivery, please contact the number or email below.
