Kannibelles clean cars for International experience

The Kootenay Kannibelles — complete with six-foot-tall gecko and a fuzzy pink monster dancing and cheering at the four-way stop leading into Nelson — were out in full force Saturday raising money to defer cost for a 20-team tournament Women's Roller Derby Tournament this weekend in Spokane.

The West Kootenay Roller Derby’s All-stars staged a car wash Saturday at the Nelson Ford Location to earn much-needed funding to go towards international roller derby domination.

Justin Podgorenko of Nelson and Logan Wullum of Trail helped Team Flyers come out the winners at the 2013 Male U16 BC Cup in Salmon Arm, edging Team Canucks 4-3 in shootout during Sunday’s championship game.

Team Flyers won the shootout 2-1.

The Male U16 BC Cup offers the top players in the province a unique experience of competing against the best in BC.

The object of the BC Hockey High Performance program is to enhance the overall performance of players, coaches and officials in high-level competition.

The Selkirk College Saints Men's Hockey program has dug into the Beaver Valley Nitehawks program to score defenceman Fruitvale native Arie Postmus to the Saints beginning in the 2013/14 B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League season.

Postmus joins the Saints following three seasons with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League's Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

West Kootenay Roller Derby proved that it’s anyone’s’ season this year.

Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers faced off against Salmo’s Babes of Brutality in the first bout of the night.

It was a close game through both 30-minute halves, with the Babes leading by as few as 40 points and ultimately winning with an unofficial score of 179-136.

Track cutting penalties near the end of the first half left the Babes with excellent scoring opportunities in the form of power jams.

Sockeyes capture fifth Cyclone Cup; Rebels rally to claim bronze

In the end a team that had won four provincial championships was clearly the best team.

The Richmond Sockeyes scored four goals in the second period to dump the Victoria Cougars 4-1 to clinch the 2013 Fred "Cyclone" Taylor Cup Sunday at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.

The Pacific Junior League champions won its fifth Cyclone Taylor Cup to go with past titles from 2009, 2004, 2003 and 1992.

In 2009 Richmond beat Nelson Leafs in the Cyclone Final.

BC Hockey to discuss raising the age for legal bodychecking

To bodycheck or not to bodycheck, that is the question being raised by BC Hockey.

Bill Bennett's Castlegar visit today coincided with a press release issued from his ministry regarding bodychecking in youth hockey. Bennett, B.C. Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, didn't speak to the release, as he was here to acclaim BC Liberal candidate for the West Kootenay Riding Jim Postnikoff, but the issue is sure to garner some attention from sports fans in the region.

Island champion Victoria Cougars meet Richmond Sockeyes in the the 2013 Fred ‘Cyclone’ Taylor Cup Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

The Cougars advanced to the final by slamming the host Comox Valley Glacier Kings 6-1 Saturday.

Kootenay International Junior Hockey League champ Castlegar Rebels meet the Glacier Kings for the bronze medal.

The Rebels finished the round robin at 1-2 with its only win coming against the host club with a 5-4 victory against the Glacier Kings.
