Kootenay Ice gets snowed under by Cariboo Cougars

The B.C. Major Midget Hockey League leaders put some serious hurt on the basement dwellers from Kootenay this weekend in the Sunflower City.

The Cariboo Cougars out scored the Ice 18-6 in two games to sweep the BCMMHL series this weekend at the Community Complex.

The Cougars opened the series scoring four power play goals en route to a 9-4 victory over the Ice Saturday.

Cariboo, first place in BCMMHL standings with a 7-2-1 mark, completed the sweep Sunday, pounding Kootenay 9-2 Sunday.

It took the Cougars just over a period to get rid of their bus legs.

The Castlegar Rebels spent the weekend more than making up for Friday’s 5-3 loss to the Ghostriders in Fernie, winning on home ice Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday saw the Rebels redeemed after hosting the Ghostriders and winning 2-1.

Usually by the end of a B.C. Major Midget Hockey League game Kootenay Ice goalies have seen more rubber than Goodyear Tire.

Which may be a bit of a nightmare to some aspiring netminders looking to parlay a successful midget campaign into a shot at tier two junior A.

Not so for Kimberley Newell.

Like a heat-seeking missile, Newell sought out the Ice goal crease as the best place to improve her skills.

 Dam Inn Mates survived a late scare from the Thundercats to get past Trail 25-17 in West Kootenay Men’s Flag Football League action Sunday at Mount Sentinel Field.

The victory keeps the Mates atop the WKMFFL standings with an undefeated mark of 4-0.

Nelson Our Glass Ogs kept up the pressure on the Mates by blasting defending league champion Castlegar Vikings.

Our Glass is second in league standings with the same amount of points — eight — but has played one more game with a record of 4-1.

The league resumes Sunday with a pair of games at Mount Sentinel.

The Nelson Leafs gained some breathing room in the race for the Murdoch penthouse while exacting some revenge on a divisional rival at the same time.

Patrick Martens scored twice and Andrew Walton rebounded from a less than stellar performance previously against Beaver Valley to power the Leafs to a 5-3 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League victory over the Nitehawks Tuesday night at the NDCC Arena.

The Sekirk Saints split a pair of home game to the University of Victoria Vikings in B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League action during the weekend in Castlegar.

The Saints, unveiling new jerseys during the opener of the two-game tilt, rode the outstanding netminder of Calgary native Andrew Wong to double the Vikes 4-2 during the opener Friday.

Selkirk came close to completing the sweep before UVIC skated to a 6-3 victory Saturday.

Andrew Green of Penticton snapped a 1-1 tie to power the Saints to the victory.
