Kolby's fundraiser exhibition game a success

A fundraiser exhibition hockey game between the Trail Smoke Eaters and the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack raised $11,285 for Kolby’s Trust Fund last Saturday.

 

A special account has been set up at the TD Canada Trust branch in Trail for Kolby Zanier, daughter of Smoke Eaters assistant coach Barry Zanier, as she continues her road to recovery. Kolby is currently in Edmonton recovering from groundbreaking heart surgery — she has suffered from Alstrom Syndrome since birth.

Castlegar Minor Soccer Association (CMSA) will be holding their Annual General Meeting in preparation for next years Youth & Mini soccer season on Oct. 18 at the Castlegar Complex at 7 p.m.

Castlegar to get our own indoor skatepark

 Not content to skate along on the summer success of Castlegar's outdoor skatepark, Ty Smith, co-founder of Friends of the Castlegar Skatepark, has now secured space for an indoor venue, as well.

Smith said the Kinnaird Community Church has generously donated what used to be the woodworking classroom in the old Kinnaird Middle School for what will be a combination skatepark and drop-in centre for kids.

The Trail Smoke Eaters of the B.C. Hockey League released former Beaver Valley Nitehawks netminder Mike Vlanich earlier this week.

Vlanich most likely wasn’t the only former Kootenay International Junior Hockey League player let go as junior A clubs reduced rosters on the eve of the start of the regular season.

However, none of the junior A cuts have made their way to the Nelson Leafs hockey club just yet.

Head coach and GM Frank Maida wishes to play the waiting game instead of making any rash decisions.

The four-time defending champion Castlegar Vikings are currently looking up at the rest of the West Kootenay Men's Flag Football League following another loss Sunday at Mount Sentinel Field.

The Steamshovel Brewers outscored the defending champs 23-6 in the second half en route to a 36-19 victory.

The loss was the second of the season for the Vikings.
In the other game Sunday, Dam Inn Mates ran its record to 2-0 with a 21-15 win over Nelson Our Glass Ogs.

The West Kootenay League is a five-team affair with Trail Thunder Cats idle Sunday.

Wildcats drop two-set final to Golden at high school volleyball tourney in Trail, LVR fourth, Stanley Humphries sixth

The Golden Eagles outscored the Mount Sentinel Wildcats 50-22 in the championship final to capture the gold medal at the J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks High School Girl’s Volleyball tournament Saturday in the Silver City.

The Eagles won the best-of-three tournament final in consecutive games 25-10, 25-12.

“We played well at times, but as anticipated, we were quite hesitant when the opponent had momentum,” said Sentinel varsity coach Joe Moreira.
