Celgar brings inspirational speaker Spencer Beach to Castlegar

Celgar is proud to present inspirational keynote speaker Spencer Beach at Chances Castlegar on May 21 at 7 p.m.

On a day just like any other, Beach was working as a flooring installer in Alberta when, in the blink of an eye, he found himself engulfed in a flash fire that changed his life forever.

Today he travels North America extensively sharing his story and experiences and bringing hope and inspiration to others.

Spencer Beach is also a National Construction Safety officer, W.H.M.I.S. instructor and author of “In Case of Fire”.

So the BC RCMP is reminding the public to check the security features of all the bank notes that they receive, including the new polymer series notes after a small number of counterfeit $100 polymer bills have recently been detected.

Food for thought: GDS-free shish kabobs like honey-mustard chicken

Food for thought: GDS-free shish kabobs like honey-mustard chicken

I'm so sorry I'm late getting this to you – believe it or not, I was trying to get a stuffed turkey in the oven early enough that we won't be eating at 8 or 9 p.m. Do I know how to celebrate Mother's Day, or WHAT?

The shish kabobs would've been my first choice for tonight, but they needed to be cooked and photographed early enough for you to make them your Sunday dinner, if the spirit moves you (or, if you're a mom like me, maybe it will move that angelic soul who's giving you a breather and doing the cooking for you).

Trail market filling up fast

Trail market filling up fast

The City of Trail and the Trail & District Chamber of Commerce say vendor space is filling up in the Trail Market on the Esplanade for the summer of 2013, with over 50 per cent of the spaces already allocated for the full year.

Because the event achieved such tremendous success in 2012 with over 6,000 visitors and 125 different vendors, the Trail Market on the Esplanade is anticipated to be an even busier.

Electrical glitch resolved at Silver City Days; rides to be running on time

A glitch that saw the rides stop working during the first night of Silver City Days is fixed in plenty of time for the causeway's opening this afternoon, according to festival society president Ian McLeod.

"One of the main generators blew up on us at about 6 p.m. (Wednesday)," he said, adding the mechanical issue put the rides out of commission, but not the food court or the entertainment stages. "The crowd tapered off a little, but we still had about 50 per cent of the (people)."

Food for thought: A little friendly ribbing

There's something about this amazing weather that turns every red-blooded Canadian's mind to ... that's right ... BARBECUE!

Ribs being the quintessential barbecue item, I spent many years longing for barbecue but unable to find gluten-free barbecue sauce we could eat. Oh, the horror.

Author's reading brings laughter/camaraderie/bodily fluids to Castlegar library

By Anne DeGrace

A rollicking tale of long hours, camaraderie, and bodily fluids—along with a healthy dose of humour—comes to Castlegar & District Public Library on May 13 at 7 p.m. with a presentation by author Jennifer Craig.

Yes Sister, No Sister, is a funny, engaging memoir of the author’s life as a trainee nurse in the 1950s in Leeds, England, delivered with Craig’s trademark Yorkshire humour. The book made the London Times bestseller list and has sold in excess of 100,000 copies.

Food for thought: GDS-free curry noodles

Food for thought: GDS-free curry noodles

You've heard the term “currying favour” (fancy way of saying 'sucking up to...')? Well, these noodles will do the trick – all my friends love them. They are hot, though – I recently made them for a friend, and she kept saying her face was on fire (but she kept eating anyway, so they must still taste okay). Feel free, though, to ease up on the heat if you're not as keen on spicy food.

When CBC began their Spotlight Search in search of the nation’s next musical sensation, no one would have known the last two standing would include Cranbrook’s The Good Ol’ Goats.

Fresh off of the Spotlight Search, The Good Ol’ Goats will be bringing their brand of bluegrass alt-folk to the 2013 Starbelly Jam Music Festival this July.
