A hurtin' lockerful of flicks: Oscar nominees part 2

Last time around I looked at four of the contenders for Best Picture in this Sunday's Academy Awards (The Blind Side, Precious, District 9, and Avatar) and deemed only Precious worthy of serious contention (ahem). I was able to pair those films into groupings around racial morality plays and human-hatin' moral parables.

Cash for Castlegar Sculpturewalk

On Feb. 23, CBT community liaison Wayne Lundeberg presented a cheque for $10,000 to Pat Field, project manager of ScupltureWalk Castlegar. CBT’s contribution will support start-up costs of the project, as well as provide mentorship opportunities for participating artists.

 

“SculptureWalk Castlegar is an innovative approach to the revitalization of the downtown core of Castlegar,” said Lundeberg.

Barney Bentall coming to Rossland

The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture presents Barney Bentall, sponsored by Teck, Trail Operations. Bentall will be fresh from the Olympics, having welcomed the torch with his group the Grand Cariboo Opry and playing free shows in Whistler Village during the games. He will be arriving at the Rossland Miners' Hall Sunday March 14th.

Locals get owly over wildlife

 

In life one thing often leads to another – and that’s how it is with an upcoming owl nest box building workshop in Blueberry Creek near Castlegar. In 2009 a very observant member of the public sighted, and reported, an endangered western screech-owl in the vicinity of Blueberry Creek.

You're invited to open house/unveiling at hospital chapel

The Trail Health Care Facilities Spiritual Care Committee is holding an Open House on Thursday, Feb. 25 in the KBRH Chapel/Reflection Room on the third floor of the hospital. The community is welcome anytime from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to view the newly installed, and spectacularly beautiful, stained glass window.


The chapel was originally established in the hospital to offer a welcoming, quiet, contemplative space for patients, their families and hospital workers.

Youth needn't be 'Bored in Castlegar'

Teens - We want your input!


Are you a youth between the ages of 13 and 19? Are you sometimes feeling bored around Castlegar? In fact, there is a lot to do or be a part of in our area, but sometimes it is hard to find out about these wonderful things. And that is why we want to help you. How do you ask? A website. Simple. Perhaps. But only with your help.

On Feb. 16, there will be two sessions held by the website designer to get input from youth on this youth-based website. One session will be held at Stanley Humphries Secondary at 3 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Last chance to win big bucks in CBT writing challenge

 

Columbia Basin Trust (CBT), in partnership with Selkirk College, is hosting free writing workshops for youth aged 15 to 29 on Feb. 27 in Trail, Nelson and Castlegar for those interested in submitting short stories to CBT’s SCRATCH Writing Challenge.

“These workshops are a great learning opportunity for all aspiring writers, and we sincerely hope youth embrace the occasion,” said Michelle d’Entremont, CBT Basin Youth Liaison.

Grants available for artists

The Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA) is inviting individuals of all artistic disciplines - as well as arts, culture and heritage organizations - to apply for funding provided by Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) under its Arts, Culture and Heritage granting program, which was recently awarded $550,000 for the 2010/11 fiscal year.

Art Walk 2010 Artist Applications Ready

It’s time to start creating! Applications for Castlegar Art Walk 2010 are now available. “We’re trying something new this year”, said Jacquie Hamilton, who volunteers with the Art/Walk Committee – “we’re circulating the information about Castlegar's 2010 Art Walk via email instead of using Canada Post.”

Artists who want to participate can still have their application mailed. You can also pick up copies of the application at Biznet Signs and the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce.
