Lettuce seed growing in Rossland

“Seed is the source of life and the first link in the food chain.  Control over seed means a control over our lives, our food and our freedom.” Physicist and activist Vandana Shiva

It’s time to dust off the gardening equipment and start planning your crops for this year! Rossland REAL Food’s annual Seedy Sunday and Interact Bake Sale welcomes local seed growers from the West Kootenays on March 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Rossland Secondary School.

COMMENT: Blueberry Creek Community School is a great community service

From the outside Blueberry Creek Community School (BCCS) looks like any typical small older rural elementary school but BCCS is anything but typical. BCCS is a Ministry of Education designated Neighbourhood of Learning and a Ministry of Children and Family Development designated Community HUB. Both ministerial designations acknowledge and celebrate the innovation and successes achieved by this small community based charitable non-profit that provides services which foster and build community and are tailored to meet the needs of our local area.

Grand Forks' green bin success a model for the region

A 200 household "green bin" pilot project for curbside compost collection in Grand Forks, instituted in 2011, was a "huge success" according to Alan Stanley, the Director of Environmental Services for the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), and has since been expanded to the whole city.

Kootenay Boundary's big, fat, million dollar 2014 recycling bonus

Kootenay Boundary's big, fat, million dollar 2014 recycling bonus

Just when the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) needs a little cash to lengthen the life for the McKelvey Creek Landfill in Trail by 26 years—namely by composting organics rather than burying them—more than $1.2 million will soon be saved by the RDKB each year thanks to provincial legislation that will require industry to take full responsibility for the paper and packaging they produce.

In other words, in May, 2014, industries will take over blue bin recycling programs right across the province.

The question of Job, or, why does bad happen?

The question of Job, or, why does bad happen?

Human beings should be treasured. Material is to be used. Our crises now all originate from one source – things are treasured, people are used.

Very little commentary is posted after my columns. I do wonder if I am writing into a vacuum sometimes. But then, I have felt the same over a dozen years of broadcasting a program on co-op radio, “The History Hour.” One cannot be certain one is received, yet one cannot let the opportunity to make a difference go unanswered. So I keep writing.

Grants for social well-being and youth available

Castlegar's Seniors Outreach and Support Pilot Project is one of the projects that has received support from CBT's Social Grants Program. Here, Sandi McCreight, Coordinator, Castlegar Community Response Network, presents outreach services to a group of seniors.

Applications are now available for two CBT programs: the Social Grants Program and the Youth Grants Program.

The deadline for both is April 12, 2013.

The Social Grants Program funds projects that primarily support social well-being and address social issues in Basin communities. The Youth Grants Program funds projects that primarily impact and benefit Basin youth aged 12-29.

COMMENT: My thoughts on the proposed Electoral Boundaries report and why action is needed

First, let me acknowledge that this is a very challenging and demanding task and I believe the Electoral Boundary Commission has overall worked hard to try to come up with something manageable in an environment where there will always be disagreement and inevitable disappointment. \

Take part in provincial consultations on the Columbia River Treaty

Residents interested in the CRT should attend one of the upcoming meetings.

Attend a Conference in Golden or Castlegar.

The Province is hosting two free conferences that will explore the future of the Columbia River Treaty (CRT) and secure input on alternative future scenarios and how Basin interests might be affected.

OP/ED: Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum, Part 2

In my Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum (APPF) column (Part I) I gave a general description of this Inter-Parliamentary Forum held in Vladivostok, Russian.

During the meeting, resolutions were adopted that will be presented to each of the countries represented at the APPF and it is possible that these statements will wind up as part of government policy.
