OPINION: Changing attitudes can't come from caveman techniques

If you want to draw attention in the Boundary region, one way to do it is to call out the under-40 brainwashed environmentalists. An odd way to get attention, but it sure worked last week.

When the local chamber of commerce invited the B.C. Chamber chief executive officer, John Winter, to present at their annual general meeting last week, they likely did not expect a hot topic. And it probably wouldn't have been if the speaker hadn't lit a match in his opening few minutes.

The story of the 2012 US presidential election we should pay attention to in Canada is not the performance of the candidates; it is a story of mathematics. The star in this regard is Nate Silver who predicted the outcome of the election with uncanny accuracy. Most pollsters held that the election was too close to call. Silver, who is not a pollster but a statistician and mathematician, devised a formula using polling data produced by others to accurately predict the outcome of the vote in every state.

It was the end of times. On moving to Trail from Castlegar we kept our rent down by agreeing to take down some of the trees that were rooting far too close to foundations and roof lines for either comfort or the good of the house. All told, I created stumps from an evergreen, two deciduous, and an ancient birch.

The remains were hauled to the curb, along with the trimmings of other trees that continue to shade our place, and provide a yearly crop of leaves or pears, cherries, or pine cones. The next summer, most of them were back.

A yummy French Christmas dinner

A yummy French Christmas dinner

The West Kootenays Francophone Association (AFKO) will hold its annual Christmas dinner. This year the event will take place on December 8th at 5pm at Tarry's Hall in Thrums. Members of the association, as well as locals are invited to attend this fun and yummy event. Special guest Santa Claus and his helpers will be there to distribute gifts while the parents can sip on a good glass of wine. Our buffet theme is about traditional recipes from Quebec, such as meat pies, pork stew, Quebec style turkey, and so much more.

Fast forward

Fast forward

A few months into the new blended learning model at Rossland Secondary School and we are able to take some time to reflect on the successes, as well as discuss the adjustments we need to make. We know it takes time to implement change and for the students and teachers to adjust to the new system and realize that the program is still in its infancy.

Kootenay Contraption Contest 2012 in full swing

Imagine the year is 2050. Gigantic, funny-shaped towers surround your view, a hovercraft zips by and of course, your robot butler hands you your drink. While we may still be far from this sort of scenario, one of the most important questions then (as now) is:

“How will we use less energy?”

The Ktunaxa and sacred land--and Jumbo

On Thursday last (November 22), we met with the Ktunaxa elders at the site of the former Residential School (St. Eugene Mission) near Cranbrook to offer our testimony in support of their expression of faith and spirituality.

“We?”You ask? United Church ministers: Frank Lewis, of Cranbrook, Christine Dudley of Kimberley, and myself –  Keith Simmonds of Rossland, Trail, Fruitvale and Salmo, and Chair of Kootenay Presbytery of the United Church of Canada.

The plush interior of a Lasting Impressions limo

Two new shuttle services to Red Mountain Resort have been negotiated for this ski season, one all the way to and from Spokane, and one a short five minute ride between Rossland and Red.

Deanne Steven of Tourism Rossland (TR) announced the new services to Rossland’s council at Monday evening's regular meeting. She was particularly excited by the new in-town shuttle that will use the “pimped out” 24-seat Hummer offered by Lasting Impressions Limousines.

Intelligence, fact, politics, wisdom, conscious machines and historical lessons

History does not repeat. People do. --- Voltaire

As an historian, I am not supposed to say that people often cannot learn from history. Yet that is what I wrote in my last column.

However, I still see much value in studying history for we-the-people who want to have some control over the politicians who have been elected to govern us. But studying in a particular way, not for facts but for wisdom.
