Banff, Alberta– Over the objections of almost 200,000 citizens, the federal government has approved the proposed “Brewster Glacier Discovery Walk” in Jasper National Park. Conservation organizations fear that the beauty and integrity of Jasper National Park are being surrendered to commercial interests, opening the door for more for-profit businesses to capitalize on the splendour of Canada’s most loved and protected landscapes.

The controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing, otherwise known as fracking, is facing mounting opposition across the country. A new Environics Research poll commissioned by the Council of Canadians has found that 62% of Canadians support “a moratorium on all fracking for natural gas until all the federal environmental reviews are complete”.

Alex Atamanenko, MP for BC Southern Interior, is angered by the Harper government's recent announcement that the Conservatives are looking at making changes to the Old Age Security pension. The government claims that the present system is becoming unsustainable because of the aging demographics of Canadians. Harper's surprise plan included a proposal to raise the age a person can start to collect OAS from 65 to 67.

Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke lost her battle nine days after crashing at the bottom of the superpipe during a training run in Utah, dying Thursday at the age of 29.
Burke was injured Jan. 10 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.

The native of Squamish, B.C. fell during a training session at a personal sponsor event and was airlifted to a hospital in Salt Lake City.

“Our hearts go out to Sarah's husband Rory and her entire family, Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge said in a statement.

We are deeply concerned that your government has already determined the outcome of the controversial Enbridge pipelines proposal even before the panel responsible for assessing its impacts has commenced its hearings. This, in our opinion, has the real potential to completely undermine the independence and impartiality of the Panel, its report and recommendations.

This year, put the country ahead of party affiliations

As we enter the new year, the prospects for defeating the Harper government in 2015 seem uncertain at best. And yet if those who care about the country were musing over a new year’s resolution, that would be it, a dedication to this single overarching purpose. Even if Harper is soundly defeated in the next election, it will take a decade to reverse the damage he has already done. If he wins a second majority, it will take a generation or more.

Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) released its annual list of the top 10 most frequently stolen vehicles in Canada today, many of which are showing up in the local market and not necessarily being exported out of Canada.

In these cases, the vehicles are often re-sold to unsuspecting consumers.

This year there is a new hot target for thieves — the 2009 Toyota Venza. It replaces the 2000 Honda Civic SiR, which was last year's number one stolen vehicle.
