Sandsations all set to start

Sandsations all set to start

Free, fun and family-friendly - the second annual Sandsations event is officially underway in the parking lot of the Pioneer Arena.

Featuring four local - but international-award-winning - sand sculptors, the event will allow folks to see massive sculptures created in a remarkably short time span, according to organizer Pat Field.

"They start carving today. They each have one helper, and they're incorporating this year's theme: Man and Nature Together," he said. "They sculpt from the top down, so when they reach the base, it's done."

Signs of improvement for West Kootenay info signs

Artist Jean-Louis Rheault stands in front of his first large scale pictorial map in Kamloops

Ever actually stopped at one of those “Information areas” along the highways in the region? You know the ones I mean. The ones featured at highway pull outs, coated with outdated ads and feature a surprisingly square, seemingly scale-less, essentially useless series of connect-the-dot lines between community names?

An idiosyncratic, multi-lingual journey through 300 years of vocal music and a homecoming of sorts

One of Nelson's own is coming back, at least for one night.

Kevin Armstrong will make his much-anticipated return to Nelson at Bogustown
Town Pub on Friday, July 22.

Armstrong is on tour across Canada to prepare his show Opera for
Heathens
for its premiere at the Edmonton Fringe Festival. A versatile and unorthodox performer, Armstrong has forged a career both in Canada and Europe, performing everything from traditional opera and musical theatre, to one-man-shows where he pairs his four-octave vocal range with his skills as a guitarist.

Mark your calendars and work up an appetite in preparation for the second annual “Need to Feed” spaghetti dinner and ice cream social, a fundraiser for Castlegar’s Community Harvest Food Bank.

The event, slated for July 30 from 5 to 10 p.m. outside the Station Museum downtown, drew hundreds last year and is expected to be better still in 2011, according to food bank manager Deb McIntosh.

Unsuccessful attempt to break world record still a staggering win ... literally

A local man’s attempt to unofficially break the world record for marathon guitar playing may have been foiled by a sinus infection and bronchitis.
