OP/ED: Not a one-horse race after all in B.C. election

Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett (left) and Liberal Candidate Jim Postnikoff kick off campaign

Hmmmm – it looks like the provincial election isn't going to be the humdrum rubber-stamp we were all expecting for the West Kootenay region.

Bill Bennett, MLA and B.C. Minister, was in Castlegar today to acclaim Jim Postnikoff as the BC Liberal candidate – meaning two-term incumbent Katrine Conroy (NDP) won't be just walking away with the win, as it appeared might be the case just last week.

The under 45 generation are getting tired of working and studying more, to have less. With rising home prices, cost of living, and incomparable wages, young people and their families are being squeezed of time, and income, and are being forced into crushing debt. On April 15 - 17, from 7 – 10 p.m. at Birchbank Golf Club (Trail), Dam Inn Pub (South Slocan), Finley’s Irish Pub (Nelson) the Generation Squeeze Campaign deals its first round to local supporters looking to party their way to a better generation deal for young people.

BC Hockey to discuss raising the age for legal bodychecking

To bodycheck or not to bodycheck, that is the question being raised by BC Hockey.

Bill Bennett's Castlegar visit today coincided with a press release issued from his ministry regarding bodychecking in youth hockey. Bennett, B.C. Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, didn't speak to the release, as he was here to acclaim BC Liberal candidate for the West Kootenay Riding Jim Postnikoff, but the issue is sure to garner some attention from sports fans in the region.

COMMENT: Parents need to take action to prevent cyberbullying

Shara Cooper

Like most parents in Canada, I have grieved for Rehtaeh Parsons, the 17-year-old teenager that committed suicide April 7 after being sexually assaulted two years ago. After the assault, she was cyberbullied until her breaking point.

As a parent, this terrifies me. I know I am in way over my head. Every parent feels that “kids didn’t act like that when I was young.” But for parents today, it’s a little more accurate.
