Five Trail teens got the experience of a lifetime while bringing a whole new realm of publicity for Silver City Days' 50th anniversary this year.

City communication and events coordinator Andrea Jolly said she was surprised by the initiative shown by Grade 11 J. L. Crowe student Eric Gonzalez, 17, when he approached her offering his videography skills to the city.

“I thought that was impressive initiative, and he was very poised and professional,” she said.

Nelson Police dealt with a series of calls the weekend as the public enjoyed the first long weekend of the summer.

The calls ranged from man unlawfully in Canada to drug seizures and officers involved in a foot chase through the streets of Nelson to catch a naked man.

Downtown chase leads to arrest of naked man

Monday evening (May 20) two officers of the Nelson Police Department saw a local man wanted for criminal harassment.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for the West Kootenay Tuesday but it’s the wind surfacing during the evening that may have caused the most damage to property in the region.

Tuesday at approximately 6:49 p.m. a wind gust dropped a tree onto a house in the Shoreacres, a few kilometers west of the Highway 3A/6 junction.

In Taghum, 10 kilometers west of Nelson, a portable garage tent was flipped over by a gust of wind.

It looks like the Regional District of Central Kootenay will not meet its target to become carbon neutral by 2012, but staff are proposing another option to meet the goal in the near future.

As a participant in the Carbon Neutral Kootenays (CNK) project, the RDCK had set a goal of reducing GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions to 12 percent below 2008 levels by 2012.

Zone One West Kootenay Junior Golf coordinator Rob McKay announced Monday that golfer Brenan Moroney has inked a letter of intent to play golf in September at Missouri Valley in Marshal Missouri.

"Brenan is a very strong player who has represented Zone 1 in five straight BC Junior Championships, has been the overall winner in Zone 1 and is currently a valuable member of the RSS (Rosslland Secondary School) Golf team," McKay explained.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency responded to a story in The Nelson Daily Tuesday regarding changes made to the meaning of “local food” in labeling in grocery stores.

Elena Koutsavakis Media Relations for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency apologized for not confirming The Nelson Daily received an email from the federal agency Tuesday afternoon.

Concerns over the changes by the CFIA were raised by Kootenay Co-op in Nelson.

Burnaby-New Westminster MP, Peter Julian, the NDP critic for Energy and Natural Resources, will be the featured guest at an informal round table hosted by B.C. Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko, and the EcoSociety in Nelson Saturday, June 1 at the Nelson United Church from 7-9 p.m.
 
The meeting coincides with a presentation at the end of May by the BC government regarding its official position on Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline to the National Energy Board Joint Review Panel (JRP).

McKay, Moroney headline Zone One West Kootenay Junior Golf Team

Two players from Birchbank head the four-person Zone One West Kootenay Junior Golf Team after qualifying this weekend at the Silver City and Redstone courses.

Tyler McKay and Brenan Moroney top the four-player team.

David Launier of Rock Creek and Isaac Janzen of Creston round out the team.

McKay finished the two-day competition with a 36-hole total of 151.

Police across the province want to advise the public to be extra careful when flocking to the numerous beaches, lakes and rivers as well as community and personal pools as the weather begins to warm up and summer approaches.

This week — May 19-25 — is Water Safety Week and the public should be warned that preliminary data from the BC Coroners Service indicates that over the past five years 397 people have drowned in British Columbia.
