The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs don’t start for another few weeks but this weekend the Nelson Leafs and Castlegar Rebels will definitely try to build some momentum when the two clubs meet in a home-and-home series beginning Friday in the Sunflower City.

The teams, scheduled to meet in the first round of the Murdoch Division playoffs, have split the regular season series right down the middle with each team winning three times, including a road victory.

On a good day the Kootenay Ice can compete with any other team in the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League.

However, when the Ice do not bring their A-game to the rink bad things happen — like the 10-0 shellacking Kootenay received at the hands of the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs Sunday in Coquitlam.

The Chiefs scored five special teams goals — three coming shorthanded to complete dominate the Ice.

Nicholas Rasovic and Boston Colley each scored twice to power Vancouver to the lopsided victory.

The first round of the Murdoch playoffs have been set.

And now Terry Jones and the Hawk players can sit back and watch the Nelson Leafs and Castlegar Rebels pound the daylights out of each other during the first round of the playoffs while Beaver Valley toys with the Spokane Braves.

While nothing is set in stone come playoff time, during the past handful of seasons the team surviving the regular season test in the Murdoch Division usually wins the playoff title.

Wanted: Community sports heroes!

Wanted: Community sports heroes!

Many of us have had a special individual in our lives or in the lives of our children who has been a mentor, a friend, and a role model. These people are sports heroes—volunteers who don’t always get the recognition they deserve. With this in mind, Sport BC is bringing the Community Sport Hero Awards, presented by Teck, to Rossland and the Greater Trail area on February 22, 2012. The awards will honour long-standing local volunteers who have made significant contributions to our communities through sport. And this is where you come in.

Big guns Walton, Delong lead Rebels past Leafs 4-1

The Castlegar Rebels sent a message right back to the Nelson Leafs, and it was the big guns leading the way.

Leading scorer Stuart Walton scored twice and Anthony Delong added a single to lead the Rebels to a 4-1 decision over the Nelson Leafs in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action Saturday night in the Sunflower City.

"I thought we out-chanced them in the first period but we spent 10-minutes in the penalty box," said Leaf coach Frank Maida.

Nelson out shot the Rebels 10-6 in the frame.
