Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and provincial and territorial governments want to hear from Canadians and agriculture industry representatives to develop the next agricultural policy framework – Growing Forward 2.

The agriculture, agri-food and agri-based sector forms an essential and innovative part of Canada’s economy.

Growing Forward 2 will build on the successes of the existing suite of programs and will leverage the ingenuity of farmers, processors and others in the sector to continue to generate economic growth.

New wildfire base in Arrow Fire Zone open and ready

Construction of the new $2-million Arrow Fire Zone Primary Attack Base in Castlegar  is now complete, bringing wildfire staff and equipment into one location.

The two-storey, 540-square-metre (5,800-square-foot) fire base is strategically located near a major intersection on Highway 3A.

The new building will be occupied by 65 seasonal Wildfire Management Branch staff, including six initial attack crews, two unit crews, six officers and one operations assistant.

The new federal budget falls short of meeting expectations of Canadian families, says BC Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko.

There are some positive aspects in the majority Conservative government's budget, he conceded, such as gas tax dollars for long-term infrastructure funding for municipalities. 

"However, overall the budget fails to make life more affordable for Canadian families still struggling to recover from the effects of the recession,” said Atamanenko.

Western Command Military Vehicle Historical Society has assembled a large group of former Canadian Military vehicles that were on display today from 4 to 6 p.m. in front of the Castlegar Legion.
 
The purpose of the convoy is to raise both youth and public awareness of Canada’s Veterans and the roles they played in the country’s Military history. This convoyl commemorate our Veterans and will serve as a means of showing support and recognition of their efforts.

A Castlegar 10-year-old remains comparatively unharmed after being hit by a car outside his school this morning (Tuesday), according to local RCMP.
 
The accident happened on 7th Avenue just after 8 a.m., in the tri-school area downtown, said RCMP Sgt.

Delving deep to uncover local history in the Slocan Valley

Local history will literally be unearthed this summer in the Slocan Valley.

A hands-on Archeology Field School will take place at Slocan Narrows Pithouse Village near Lemon Creek in the Slocan Valley from June 18 to July 29. 

Pairing Selkirk College’s School of University Arts and Sciences with the Anthropology Department at Hamilton College (Clinton, N.Y), 14 of the 30 pithouses located at the site have been dated through radiocarbon dating.

Stanley Cup celebrations in Surrey

Surrey RCMP estimate that approximately 4,000 hockey fans attended the Central City Plaza in City Centre on Saturday night to watch the live television broadcast of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The event continues to be a family-friendly affair providing an opportunity for local fans to come together and cheer on the Vancouver Canucks.
