Selkirk College and the Kootenay Association of Science and Technology (KAST) in partnership with SNC Lavalin, were once again successful in linking students to businesses and government representatives—providing potential employment opportunities and an increased awareness of local environmental projects—through its Environmental Networking Seminar Luncheon series.

Rec survey to randomly chose residents for input

The Castlegar and District Recreation Commission would like to inform the citizens of Castlegar and Areas I and J that it is presently conducting a telephone survey of randomly selected homes in the area.

The purpose of the survey is to assess current recreation services and to assist in future planning of Recreation Services in the community.

If you are selected by telephone, the Commission would appreciate your time and effort in completing this important survey.

MP joins condemnation of Canada Post decision

Canada-wide changes proposed by Canada Post that will see local mail rerouted from rural communities to sorting centres in cities have drawn the ire of local NDP Member of Parliament Alex Atamanenko (BC Southern Interior).

“This completely defies all logic,” said Atamanenko.

“In this riding, the result will be that some letters will travel over 1,200 kilometres, round trip, for processing in Vancouver on the weekends and back again prior to delivery on Monday.”

COMMENT: Margaret Atwood should not have accepted Tel Aviv prize

Novelists Amitav Ghosh and Margaret Atwood have accepted the Dan David prize at Tel Aviv University, an institution at the heart of Israel’s military-industrial complex. By doing so they have spurned Palestinian civil society’s call for boycott, divestment and sanctions on the Zionist state. Atwood has specifically ignored this wonderful open letter from the students of Gaza.

WALBERG: In the British election, everybody lost

Britain is poised for a long period of political instability as it enters its first coalition government since WWII, when the wartime unity government was led by Winston Churchill with Labour in tow.

Extreme racing event to raid the region

Castlegar's about to get 'raided' by extreme sports fans, as a six-day, 500-kilometre adventure race invades the West Kootenay.

Raid the North Extreme has hosted intense, non-stop wilderness races through some of Canada's most challenging landscape, from Newfoundland and the Queen Charlotte Islands to Revelstoke and Whitehorse, and chief adventure officer Geoff Langford says the competitors mean business.

HE SAID: Climate change bill catastrophic

Leave it to the NDP to introduce a Private Members Bill that I believe will not only be devastating to the Canadian economy but also one that is seemingly based on inconclusive science.

Bill C-311 requires the Canadian federal government to set regulations to attain a midterm target to bring green house gas emissions 25  per cent below 1990 levels and a long term target to bring emissions 80 per cent below 1990 levels by 2050.

SHE SAID: Climate change debunkers need reality check

To oppose Bill C-311, a climate change legislation passed in the House of Commons on May 5, you must first reject the concept of climate change... so let's start there, shall we?

Can you find scientists to debunk the current modern reality that is climate change?

Sure you can!

You can also find scientists who'll tell you the government is injecting nano-tech mind-control chips into your blood stream through immunizations, others who will show you 'proof' the U.N. is run by alien cyborgs, and still others who will attest that O.J. really was innocent.

Castlegar kid 'comes clean' with community project

Community wellness can be child's play – just ask 12-year-old Kyle Kallin, who secured funding for, then organized, an event to clean up Millennium Park.

The Grade 6 student said he often enjoys time at the city's signature park.

“I like to go biking down there lots,” he said. It's nice on the walkways, but when you go down into the trees, there's lots of plastic and scrap metal and tires and garbage.”
