Grant from United Church helps bolster May writers retreat in New Denver

The B.C. Conference of the United Church of Canada has awarded $2,500 to support the May 11-13 Convergence Writers’ Retreat in New Denver.
The focus of the Retreat, to occur at New Denver’s Heart’s Rest Retreat Centre, is on writing on social justice themes.
The event offers three talks/discussions on aspects of social change writing, three writing workshops on a variety of topics, and a Sunday, May 13 afternoon public reading and musical performance.
“The Church’s support, joined with that of the Columbia Basin Trust and the Regional District of Central Kootenay, demonstrates that it’s important to a broad cross-section of the community to articulate our concerns and hopes about social justice,” said George Meier, co-founder of the Heart’s Rest Retreat Centre and a member of New Denver’s Turner Zion United Church.
Meier said the recent grant came through the B.C. Conference’s Van Dusen Fund, with Turner Zion sponsoring the application.
The Convergence Writers’ Retreat recently received a $1,000 award from Area H Regional District Director Walter Popoff’s Community Development fund. Other support has come from the Columbia Basin Trust, and Heart’s Rest Retreat Centre.
The Writers’ Retreat registration fee of $236 includes meals throughout the weekend.
The event is limited to 25 participants, with about half the spaces spoken for so far, Meier said.
