Trail to get big $ assist from province and ICBC
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) have both contributed financially to the City of Trail’s Victoria Street Revitalization Project. The ministry has provided $125,000 in funding with ICBC contributing $28,400 towards the city’s key revitalization and safety enhancement efforts.
Through the development of a close partnership and coordination between the municipality and the BC government, Victoria Street will be almost completely rebuilt.
“The paving through downtown Trail is a part of a corridor strategy that has seen Highway 3B resurfaced from the junction with Highway 3 up at Nancy Greene, through Rossland and Warfield and now through Trail,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “The ministry took this opportunity to reach out to the municipalities along Highway 3B to find synergies to get the best value for municipal and provincial tax payers, while helping to build a safe and reliable network connecting these communities with the rest of the province.”
ICBC reviewed the plans that are currently being implemented and commended the city on changes that will enhance safety such as: pedestrian bump-outs; enhanced pedestrian crossings; lane designations and intersection markings.
“We’re pleased to partner with the City of Trail and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in making improvements on Victoria Street,” said Dave Dean, ICBC road safety engineer. “Road improvements deliver real value to everyone on our roads, from drivers to pedestrians. We’ll continue to invest in road safety initiatives that help make roads safer.” The city’s grant is part of ICBC’s cost sharing opportunities for its Road Improvement Program; a program that invests in road infrastructure improvements including: municipal capital projects; safety studies and road sign and marking reviews to improve BC’s roads.
The Victoria Street Revitalization Project is one of council’s top priorities. Improvements to Trail’s downtown area will create a more welcoming and safer environment, and should also help strengthen the overall downtown business economy.
“The Victoria Street Revitalization Project is a multifaceted project,” said Trail mayor Deiter Bogs. “The overall goal is to revitalize the area with improved infrastructure, beautification and safety enhancements. The support of and the ministry and ICBC is a key component of this project.”
In addition to the city’s revitalization works, the ministry will resurface approximately 1.5 km of Highway 3B from Railway Lane to Victoria Street Bridge, as well as about 5.5 km of side roads in the Nelson, Castlegar and Fruitvale areas. The ministry will also pave 6,000 square metres of stop-ways on either end of the runway at the Trail Regional Airport to make it safer and more reliable for take offs and landings. The total project cost is approximately $1.6 million, with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary contributing $170,000.
