In a disturbing interview from Parliament Hill today, local MP Alex Atamanenko confirmed he is, indeed, in the East Block of Parliament Hill today, but is unharmed and safe.

“We’re in the building with armed police protection, so I don’t think that’s a concern,” he said. This, after a gunman shot and killed a soldier guarding the National War Memorial and (the gunman) was subsequently shot and killed by police.

“We’ve been locked down ever since the shooting this morning at about 9:55 a.m. Ottawa time,” Atamanenko said.

When asked if he felt these events would change the paradigm of comparative safety Canadians have always enjoyed, Atamanenko said it’s too soon to tell.

“I don’t know, we’ll just have to see how this plays out in the days and weeks to come,” he said. “I feel really badly that a soldier lost his life.

“This is a terrible situation, and we’re going to have to somehow find a way to get back on track.”
