NPD forced to put down stressed bear in Fairview

Bears continue to be a problem for residents of Nelson.
The latest incident happened Friday (September 11) afternoon as Nelson Police was called to deal with a bear in a tree in Fairview region of Nelson.
The call came in a at approximately 12:45 p.m, from a home owner in lower Fairview after the bear had been observed approximately 40-50 feet in a tree since early Friday morning.
When police arrived it was determined the bear was showing signs of stress after being in the tree since approximately 5:30 a.m.
Nelson Police said BC Conservation was notified and attended the scene to assess the situation and the potential dangers and options.
NPD also received additional information that the bear was becoming a problem to residents after frequenting the area numerous times.
After careful consideration to residents in the area and potential hazards leaving the bear in the tree, the decision was made to put the bear down.
The bear was then removed from the tree by city staff.
NPD would like to remind the public that this is the time for bears to be looking for food and to ensure that garbage, compost, and waste products are disposed of in a secure manner to avoid any possible confrontations with wildlife.
In addition, residents are asked to please ensure that your fruit trees are maintained as bears’ food supplies this year have decreased and bears are seeking new sources of food.
