Liberal candidate for MP, Connie Denesiuk

Thank you to the Castlegar Source for this opportunity to introduce myself and to explain the need for change that drives my vision for a better Canada.
I grew up in Penticton and, together with my husband Bob, have run a construction business that has served the South Okanagan since 1980. Our lives are enriched by four adult children and three delightful grandchildren. I have always been actively involved in organizations and groups aimed towards making positive change. I currently serve on the Board of Governors for Okanagan College. I recently retired from Summerland Credit Union and Summerland Chamber of Commerce boards and as chair of Trail of the Okanagans.
My experience as a school trustee, board chair of the Okanagan Skaha School District, and as President of the B.C. School Trustees Association has led me to believe that there is no substitute for taking the time to listen to people and to learn about their concerns and issues, and then boldly and actively seek solutions.
During the past 15 months, I have focused my attention on learning about concerns, issues and ideas from people throughout our new riding. I have met with mayors, citizens and business people, in coffee shops, around campfires, on doorsteps and in the streets. Over and over I heard their worries about aging infrastructure and, especially, about our stagnant economy and the lack of opportunity for young families in the Southern Interior.
I have also spent time learning from people who provide and receive social supports, senior’s care and post secondary education. Their personal stories compel me to work hard to fill those gaps.
As President of the B.C. School Trustees Association, I presided over meetings that included representatives from all 60 school districts in the province. During those meetings I saw the power that is generated when people with different political stripes and differing views come together – and work towards solutions that represent the greater good. That process, although sometimes messy, is the kind of democracy that needs to return to the House of Parliament. Democracy can’t exist with omnibus bills or lack of transparency.
I firmly believe that we need to get Canada back on track, forge a new and hopeful future for all Canadians. The Canada I envision is led by a Liberal Government that:
-Unites rather than divides,
– Builds a strong economy, by investing in infrastructure, education, innovation and effective trade partnerships,
– Respects democracy, electoral fairness and transparency,
-Supports those who need it most,
-Takes action on climate change and environmental protection,
– Renews and builds respect for Canada on the international stage
