Thirty-one new sculptures will be landing in Castlegar’s downtown this Saturday, marking the sixth year of the internationally-renowned Castlegar Sculpturewalk.

“2016 has a few firsts for us,” says Executive Director Joy Barrett. “We’re featuring the largest piece we’ve ever shown – a huge steel sculpture weighing over 25,000 pounds from Iranian artist Zohreh Vahidifard – and we’ve also got two pieces flying to us from Moscow. It’s wonderful to see Castlegar, the Sculpture Capital of Canada™, attracting quality work from across the globe. We are also drawing on the incredibly talented pool of artists we have here in the Kootenays.”

Sculpturewalk has been embraced by the residents of Castlegar, who welcome the yearly-rotating art gallery that graces their downtown. It is the #1 rated local attraction on TripAdvisor™, bringing back visitors annually to see what new sculptures have arrived.

Each year, the viewing public vote for their favourite sculpture for the People’s Choice Award, with the winning sculpture purchased by the City of Castlegar for its permanent collection. To date, thanks to the People’s Choice Award and Sculpturewalk’s Sales and Leasing program, Castlegar is now home to over fifty sculptures, an increase of over 2,000 per cent since the program began.

Business and individual sponsorships, sculpture sales & leases, and the vision and commitment of the residents of Castlegar have made the program a success. Castlegar Sculpturewalk would also like to thank our major supporters: the City of Castlegar, Columbia Basin Trust, RDCK Area J, The Sandman Hotel, Castlegar News, Yule Andersen Chartered Accountants, Trowelex and The Kootenay Gallery.
