LETTER: Discussing equality as a community

Dear Editor,
I have read and shared a number of posts regarding the archaic and controversial speaker at an evangelical event. I don’t regret sharing my opinion, at all, for the longest time Castlegar remained relatively silent on a number of issues.
Well, that has changed.
Castlegar has struggled with its identity, always being cast in the shadow. That shadow, in my opinion, has been lifted.
We are a City with passion, a city with strong opinions, and the willingness to guide the conversation even if it means calling out those institutions political, religious or otherwise that have been seen as powerful or untouchable, even if it makes us uncomfortable.
Women being equal to men takes nothing away from men but it does strengthen the world around us. As for the LGBTQ community, you have allies, plenty of them, most likely more than you realize. Invite us in, teach us and give guidance. We are ready and proud to stand with you.
We have an obligation to stand up to fight for equality. We have a duty to make sure that we are inclusive and kind and loving and that we call out homophobia, misogyny, bigotry, “insert your word here”, the list goes on.
Whatever it is that you feel passionate about, start a conversation, educate or enlighten, having a voice is the most important thing to have.
Castlegar is ready for many conversations and for that I feel proud.
