Castlegar and District Community Services (CDCSS) is encouraging Castlegar residents to once again, team up, fundraise and walk in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY). This family friendly, winterrific fundraising walk takes place on the evening of Feb. 24, 2024 and supports vulnerable adults and youth experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness here in Castlegar.

Across Canada tens of thousands of people will take to the streets for CNOY with events taking place in over 200 cities and towns. By Walking together, in the chill of the night, participants will better understand the experience of being in the streets during a cold Canadian winter, while raising funds to aid CDCSS in providing much needed support.

The Castlegar walk will begin at the United Church participants will walk a 2, or 5 km route and warm up with hot drinks and snacks along the way and warm soup when they return. All those who raise$150 or $75 for youth will receive the 2024 toque to wear on the walk. Any participant may choose to walk virtually and still raise funds.
This is Castlegar’s sixth year taking part in Coldest night and to date we have raised a total of over $92, 559.! This year we will reach over $1,000, 000 total funds over the last six years! We are aiming to raise over $20, 000 this year and grow the event year after year with your support and help.

Anyone can help be a part of this event. You can donate, you can volunteer, you can walk, you can tell some friends, every bit helps. All you have to do is visit CNOY.org and select Castlegar, then sign up.

Last year, in the 2023 walk, 78 walkers raised over $13, 547! Thank you! And thank you to the 130 donors who supported the walkers!

As many of you know the Castlegar Youth Action Network (CYAN), and groups of youth in the community take a lead role in planning and executing this event, the youth teams including the Castlegar SHSS Coyotees, Grad Executive and CYAN raised a total over $3,670. Amazing work for all the youth in our community! One of our lead teams deserving much thanks was Kalesnikoff Lumber.  We wish to acknowledge and thank all the local businesses who sponsor this event annually or provide free or discounted goods and services.

First of course, our lead sponsor for the past six years Mercer Celgar. Thank you so much! Returning sponsors for 2023, Heritage Credit Union and Stellar Vista Credit Union, your sponsorship is much appreciated. To the companies providing goods and services, you are helping to promote this event, feed the participants and make Coldest Night of the Year Castlegar a success. Thank you to the United Church, Robson Hall, McDonalds, Crumbs, Safeway, Kootenay Market, the Castlegar Source, Castlegar News, Bounce Radio, Goat Radio, and Pennywise Ads.

On a final note much thanks and gratitude to a young woman named Haley Walters for stepping into the
Director role at the last minute to make sure our 2023 event happened. Haley you’re the best!
