Const. Nolet died at Kelowna General Hospital ICU after being critically injured following an avalanche Monday, January 9, in the mountains near Goat Range Provincial Park, northwest of Kaslo.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for much of BC as a cold spell is forecasted for most of the province.

“Arctic air will spread throughout BC (Saturday) bringing a major shift in temperature from our mild January,” the Environment Canada statement said.

The City of Nelson announced that a private Celebration of Life service is planned for Nelson Police Constable Mathieu Nolet on Monday, January 30 at the Nelson Rod and Gun Club beginning at 11:30 a.m.

The City of Nelson media release said that the service is for invited guests only and not open to the general public.

Nelson RCMP has opened an investigation of theft of mail from Canada Post Offices in Slocan Park and Ymir.

In a media release Thursday, RCMP said the stolen mail was discovered inside a pickup truck following a report of a suspicious vehicle on Giveout Creek Forest Service Road  south of Nelson, on Sunday, January 22, 2023.

There are deep layers of concern and uncertainty over deep layers of weak snow buried in the West Kootenay backcountry alpine regions that could create large avalanches.

Although there have been no avalanches reported in the West Kootenay region for the last two days, dangerous conditions still exist in the backcountry, according to Avalanche Canada (AC).
