I will sign the anti-HST referendum petition. That doesn’t mean I think the HST is a bad way of regulating our tax structure or bettering our economy: it does mean I see protection and preservation of the integrity of our democratic system as a much higher priority.

 On April 17, 2010 members of the Trail RCMP with the assistance of the Regional General Investigation unit executed a search warrant on a residence on Balsam Road in Fruitvale. A large, sophisticated indoor marihuana growing operation was located inside the residence, along with a loaded handgun and rifle.

843 plants were seized along with several pounds of dried marihuana bud.

Monday evening, the people of the West Kootenay organized in a show of strength unseen in this area in recent years. An estimated 1,500 plus people lined Hospital Road in Trail with signs, drums and vocal chants protesting the proposed cuts to the O.R. at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.

It seems that everyone agrees, from our regional rural development chair at Selkirk College to the federal government, the biggest problem threatening our economic future is babies. Or rather, the lack of them. Its not that our population is declining, immigration is boosting the numbers, but that, overall, the population is not growing.
