The BC RCMP has notified the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) of an incident which has resulted in injury to a man and a woman.

Just before 5 p.m. on Nov. 9, frontline officers of the Cranbrook RCMP responded to firearm complaint at a residence in 200-block of 16 Ave N, in Cranbrook. Officers observed a man and woman leave the residence and get into a vehicle. During the course of an attempt to arrest a male and female there was contact between police and civilian vehicles which culminated in the police discharging their weapons.

The vehicle continued and was involved in a collision with a tree nearby. The man and woman fled from the vehicle on foot, and were arrested with the assistance of a police service dog. After the man was taken into custody, he complained of injury. Both the man and woman were transported to a local area hospital for treatment and have since been released from hospital and remain in police custody. They are expected to appear in court later today.

The Cranbrook RCMP is continuing to investigate the firearms and driving offences, while IIO BC is investigating to determine whether police actions are linked to the man and woman’s injuries. As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.

Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation and verification by the IIO BC. For more information about the IIO BC and media updates, you can visit its website at www.iiobc.ca
