Council Highlights October 5, 2020 

Council approved establishing a Housing Working Group to:  support and provide direction in the development of a Housing Strategy and  provide ongoing support on implementation.

Council reviewed the proposed 2021 Permissive Tax Exemption Bylaw and is proceeding with the required readings. Each year, Council reviews permissive tax exemption applications from qualifying, Castlegar-based, registered, non-profit organizations using property for municipal, recreational, religious, cultural or charitable purposes.

Council approved the purchase of two pick-up trucks to replace end-of-life trucks which were taken out of the City’s fleet earlier this year.

The Mayor provided an update on the West Kootenay Regional Airport’s new passenger service which provides daily flights to and from Vancouver.

Council passed a resolution regarding a preliminary cost-sharing and latecomers agreements in support of a proposed 34-unit residential strata under development at 100 18th Street. These agreements will support off-site servicing improvements to ensure adequate water flows for fire suppression and storm water management.

As per City policy, Council authorized the annual cost of living increase for volunteer firefighter and exempt staff.
