Interior Health issues Drug Alert for Nelson area

Interior Heath has issued a DRUG ALERT for the Nelson area after a sample believed to be methamphetamine tested positive for down (caffeine, mannitol, fentanyl, benzodiazepine). 

Interior Health said in a media release Friday, the overdose risk is very high when stimulants are contaminated/mixed with down.

“Please ensure your clients are aware of safer drug use tips that can help prevent overdose as well as where they can access naloxonedrug checking and other overdose prevention services in your community,” the Interior Health media release said.

In the release, Interior Health said the drugs:

  • Looks Like: Clear/White Shares, Crystals, Powder
  • Sold as: Meth, Side, Methamphetamine
  • Contains: Methamphetamine Down (caffeine, mannitol, fentanyl, benzodiazepine)
  • Risk: Risk of overdose and death
  • Symptoms: Side effects include, Drowsiness, Itchiness, Memory Loss, Nausea

Interior Health said there are steps to take — no matter if smoking, snorting, injecting — to prevent overdose:

  • Before using, Get drugs checked to find if meth contains fentanyl — find locations at drugchecking.ca
  • Be aware of unexpected side-effects
  • Be aware of risk of mixing with other drugs, including alcohol
  • Use with others around or at an Overdose Prevention Site (OPS)
  • Start with small amount and space out doses
  • Carry naloxone and know how to use it
